weblog 3: a tale of two arguments.

After reading through Peter Singer’s, “The Singer Solution to World Poverty” and Greg Shaefer’s, ” Singer’s not-so Persuasive Solution to World Poverty”, it is clear that while both men are focusing on the same issue that both go about it two different ways. While Singer is clearly a very dedicated philanthropist, he tends to want to keep pushing the idea onto the readers, almost as if he wants to make them feel as completely guilty as he can possibly make them.  Though Shaefer on the other hand finds this tactic a bit to forced and does not believe in Singer’s idea that every one who can donate should do so with as much as possible rather than spending their money on luxuries. Yes, sometimes people tend to overspend and become very much attached to these things, but that is exactly what they are, just things. Rather than Singer wanted to guilt trip people, he should have come up with a more recognizable and friendly approach. These people who can afford such things usually worked hard for what they have, it may take more persuasion for them not to want to spend it on something nice for themselves and loved ones.

As with Schaefer he does point out that in the beginning he was feeling very strong towards Singer’s article with his use of a movie plot from Central Station and from the book, Living High and Letting Die. Both plots for these stories focus on choosing a life of a child, or the luxury money had bought them. In the end the child lives in Central Station, though not in Living High and Letting Die. Singer used these as a metaphor on how selfless, yet selfish many people can be.

Topic Triage:

1. i am talking about the impact of world poverty.

2. i am saying how this Peter Singer is giving very strong ideas and emphasizing on his own beliefs, though as an entire country in an economic crisis it is hard to always give.

3. i am saying this because the united states itself is needing all the help it can get, though it isn’t always seen that way.

4. this is so because over the past decade from when these articles were written there have been many huge business closings, many of which were the foundations of our country.

5. readers should care because this is their country too, they are living this.
